Earflare
Pomona, Belize
Late Preclassic period 50 B.C. - A.D. 50
Jade
Diam. 18 cm
From "The Blood of Kings - Dynasty and Ritual in Maya Art" by Linda Schele and Mary Ellen Miller

"This exquisite earflare, discovered in a Late Preclassic tomb at Pomona, Belize is one of few recovered examples of the large type earflare. It is incised with four texts arranged on opposite sides of the flare... The glyphs refer to gods and apparently record the cosmic sanction that this ruler wished to invoke."
