THINGS TO DO > SCUBA Diving and Snorkeling

The opportunities for snorkeling are abundant and offer a wealth of interesting marine habitats to explore, including tropical watersheds, lagoons and lakes. Tobacco Caye and Southwater Caye are notable for their locations right on the reef that let you enjoy hours of snorkeling without ever having to get too far from a cold beverage. You can snorkel right off the beach without the need of a boat, and swim to all depths and levels of experience right from the islands.

For the more daring, the outer reefs provide miles of exquisite terrain to swim through and around. The spur and groove starts at about 10ft and goes as deep as 30ft. Eagle rays, barracuda and tarpon will excite you. For the real experienced and adventurous, the drop off starts at 40ft in some locations, but can start as deep as 50ft. Care must be taken while snorkeling the outer reefs as currents can be tricky, and you should not try this without a guide, buddy and tender. Check with your tour operator or guide.

SCUBA Diving

Recently established, Southwater Caye Marine reserve is a diving dream of patch reef, drop offs and wall diving. Within the spur and groove canyons, and the intricate reef systems lurk barracuda, turnicates and eagle rays in coral formations that are unimaginably beautiful.

Unlike the northern areas of the barrier reef, the southern reaches around Stann Creek are spared heavy boat traffic and commercial fishing as well as too much tourist traffic, keeping them immaculately unspoiled. Diving any of these waters will treat you to scores of fish species, anemone, sea urchins, fans, gorgonia and sponges that create a spectacle of color and motion.

Dive operators, equipment and a variety of excursions that cater to all classes of divers are abundantly available in Stann Creek, just check the services section. Whether you're a veteran underwater enthusiast or just a novice, it's an experience you won't want to miss.
